Gupta will present and expand on her critically acclaimed project For, In Your Tongue, I Cannot Fit (2017–18), an immersive installation and soundscape consisting of 100 microphones suspended above 100 metal spikes, each piercing a page inscribed with a fragmented verse of poetry by a poet imprisoned for their work, writings, or beliefs. The book alternates between languages and includes poetry from the eighth to the twenty-first century. Gupta brings attention to the larger events and experiences of world history in each poem, giving those who have been silenced a voice.
Gupta will show new work that builds on the research and issues explored in the installation, including the artist’s first pair of motion flapboards, which expand on her use of sound, language, and the power of speech.
