1988, Atlantic City. Jonny & Rebecca are deeply in love, as well as deeply in debt. He’s a poor singer-songwriter who spends a lot of his time at the Oasis Casino Hotel Resort playing backup for Annie, and she is working part-time at the casino as well as working for a local charity. They are struggling to make ends meet, but they are content, and that is enough for them.
But is it?
Will the allure of money overcome the vow of faithfulness when the rich newcomer Larry Harris appears in town & promises Rebecca one million dollars to spend the night with him? Will Rebecca say yes to Larry’s risqué proposal? Will her marriage be able to continue if she doesn’t? Will Jonny be there if she does?
Indecent Proposal is a chamber musical based on the Jack Engelhard novel that sparked a worldwide debate and also was later adapted into the 1993 hit film. It stays true to the book’s setting of Atlantic City in the 1980s while reimagining the work through the lens of today’s political and social climate, enabling audiences to recognise what they would do in a similar situation while watching this couple deal with the fallout from a stranger’s proposition.
It stars Norman Bowman plays Jonny, Lizzy Connolly is Rebecca, Ako Mitchell is Larry, Jacqui Dankworth is Annie, and Eve de Leon Allen is Heidi and is directed by Charlotte Westenra. Michael Conley wrote the book and lyrics, while Dylan Schlosberg composed the music.
