From the 1960s through the 2010s, learn about the lives and artistic aspirations of internationally renowned Japanese women artists.
This exhibition highlights the personal lives and meditations of each artist as well as the subjects of their work, focusing on six aesthetically spectacular works done in a variety of media. Shinoda Tk, Yoshida Chizuko, Kobayashi Kiyoko, Furuta Miyuki, Kawauchi Rinko, and Yamamoto Akane are among the artists included in this exhibition.
The exhibition allows you to reflect on larger concerns and debates around gender inequality, as well as the artists’ particular tales. In Japan in 2021, this was brought into sharp focus after a top male politician applauded the women in his team who didn’t talk for too long. He used the Japanese verb wakimaeru, which means ‘to comprehend the correct order and conventions and to act in accordance with them.’
In the wake of the controversy, the backlash, and a recent report revealing Japan’s glaring gender divide, this exhibition provides an intimate look into the lives of women navigating contemporary Japanese society, amplifying the six artists’ stories and celebrating the universal resonance of their work.
