This five-part film series offers the chance to view, in a cinema space, four of her remarkable film works – including her best-known film, Fuses (1964-67), on a newly restored print. It also contextualises her work by placing Schneemann’s work in dialogue with films by her contemporaries that approach similar themes – sexuality, the taboos around women’s bodies, and the experience of viewing human suffering through mediated images.
A double-bill of documentaries offers an engaging and accessible introduction to the artist, while a fifth and final session, programmed by external curating partners Art in Flux, considers her legacy for artists working today and addressing issues of sexuality and gender.
