Is Theatre The New Go-to To Take The Family?

We listed our theatre favourites so you don’t have to!

Understandably, having a family of all ages, from a newborn baby to teenage son to grandparents, it’s often hard to find something that accommodates everyone’s needs. Well, with most theatres having been renovated to be accessibility friendly, and many providing lower capacity viewings due to covid; theatres may just be the perfect go-to thing to do with the family. 

Living in London, the number of theatres available are too many to list, so we at iVisitlondon.co.uk have compiled a list of our theatre upcoming favourites for 2022 for you to choose from.  

Polka Theatre

This is a big hit amongst the younger age range (children from 0-12 years) of families. With a huge range of children based theatre and activities, adults back and enjoy the show as Polka theatre magically grabs the attention of the little ones. With a huge range of productions to choose from, there’s something for everyone. Having re-done the theatre to build it into the child-friendly and accessible environment it is today.

29th Jan – 27th March 

When Sofia discovers a mountain bike in the boarded-up shed at the bottom of her garden, she doesn’t realise the thrilling adventures that await her. Join Sofia and her Mum as they travel across mountains and lakes, day and night, in a race like no other. Created by Polka’s Artistic Director, this is a gentle show for younger children which introduces different natural environments and explores the bond between a mother and her young daughter.

Are you ready? Are you steady? Then let’s GO!

The Gingerbread Man

23rd – 24th Feb

Imagine being born in an oven and the first person you meet wants to dunk you in his tea! Come and see the adventure of the deliciously-smelling Gingerbread Man and meet the bravest biscuit of all time!

Stuff and Nonsense apply their usual brilliance with a mix of puppetry, live-action, great music, humour and a stunning staging of this well-loved classic tale. Suitable for 3+ just don’t turn up hungry! Now run, run, as fast as you can, you need to get tickets to catch this Gingerbread Man!

Emperor’s New Clothes

28th April  – 22nd May

Hiccup Theatre brings you the greatest fake news story ever told!

It’s Dress up and Play Day! The Emperor likes nothing more than a fashion parade and you are all invited to Ooh and Ahh at his latest eye-popping outfit. Meet the vain Emperor, the pandering advisors who offer uncritical support, and the crowd, who fail to recognize the truth, preferring lies to flourish. Hilarious and heartwarming, magical and musical…it’s a stylish treat for all the family.

The award-winning Hiccup Theatre spins music, puppetry, BSL and storytelling into a very special yarn. Supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Ian McKellen Producer Grant. A brand new adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen Classic.

Nimax Theatres

Nimax Theatres are amongst the top well known London theatres, the Palace Theatre being home to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the Lyric Theatre showcasing Get up, Stand up! The Bob Marley musical and much much more. It is a bit more on the pricier side, however, group tickets can be bought cheaper and for that level of theatrics and entertainment, we guarantee the experience is worth every penny.

The Drifters Girl

LW Theatres

Another popular name amongst the West End, but with so many great plays this year, we simply could not miss picking some of them out. Many of the shows being musicals are exactly what you may be looking for, we’ve definitely added it to our list of places to visit.

Back To The Future

Frozen The Musical

27th August – 26th June

Prepare to fall in love all over again with Disney’s FROZEN, as a brand-new theatrical experience debuts at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
