Daniel Kitson: A Show For Christmas

“A Christmas Tale” by Daniel Kitson: A Theatrical Journey of Possibility, Magic, and Toffees.

At precisely 4:52 pm on Wednesday, 24th December, Pollyanna Plunket, momentarily captivated by the allure of unwrapping a bag of toffees, diverts her gaze from the road for no more than a fleeting second. Upon redirecting her attention, she discovers an elderly man mysteriously positioned in the middle of the street. Reacting swiftly, she blares the horn, slams the brakes, and though her mid-sized motorhome decelerates, it does not halt. Skidding across the glossy black tarmac, it collides with the old man, frozen in place, burdened by a worn red bag. The inevitable collision propels him over the bonnet, meeting her gaze with an oddly serene expression before he gracefully slumps down the windscreen, disappearing from view.

This tale encapsulates Possibility, Magic, Grief, Hope, Tradition, and, of course, Toffees—essentially, the essence of Christmas.

In 2014, prompted by Shelley Hastings at the Battersea Arts Centre, Daniel Kitson found himself unexpectedly inspired to craft a Christmas show. Unveiled for five enchanting nights in the Grand Hall at BAC that Christmas and extended for fourteen nights the following year at the Connelly Theatre in New York, the show later embarked on a UK tour in December 2017.

As we approach December once again, commemorating the release of this extraordinary narrative on Vinyl, CD, and Cassette, the show is set to be restaged, quite possibly for the final time, in the exquisite setting of the Alexandra Palace Theatre.

With an age recommendation of 16+, “A Christmas Tale” promises to be a poignant exploration of the holiday season, delivering a unique blend of humour, heart, and the unmistakable touch of Daniel Kitson’s storytelling prowess. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this festive journey, as it weaves together the threads of tradition, the unexpected, and the sweet delight of toffees, creating a Christmas memory to last a lifetime.
