The Theatre Royal Haymarket, once known as the ‘Little Theatre in the Hay,’ is a Grade I listed structure in the heart of London’s West End. It is one of Britain’s most valuable theatres, having been designed and built by John Potter in 1720.
All of the buildings on the eastern side of the Haymarket, from the theatre southward, were constructed around 1820 as part of John Nash’s neighbourhood development plans. The owners of the theatre were convinced by Nash to rebuild on a position a little south of the existing one so that the portico would block the view from Charles Street. The theatre has 893 seats and is the third-oldest still-in-use London Playhouse.
Today, the Haymarket endeavours to provide audiences from all around the world with unforgettable theatrical experiences. The theatre’s production company, Theatre Royal Haymarket Plays, was founded in 2007 and has since produced some of the theatre’s most popular productions, including Waiting for Godot and Flare Path. Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Eileen Atkins, Sir Patrick Stewart, Sienna Millar, Sheridan Smith, Ralph Fiennes, Joanna Lumley, and Robert Lindsay, to mention a few, have all appeared in the seasons directed by Jonathan Kent, Sean Mathias, and Sir Trevor Nunn.
