The Charterhouse is a historic Carthusian monastery in London, situated between the Barbican and Smithfield Markets, to the north of what is now Charterhouse Square. Since the collapse of the monasteries in the 16th century, the property has been used as a private residence, a boys’ school, and an almshouse, as it still is today.
The public is welcome to explore their eventful narrative in their museum, which was co-curated with the Museum of London.
In the museum, you will be able to explore some of their unique artefacts, such as their skeleton of a Black Death victim and medieval water chart, as well as get to know the different Tudor owners of the Charterhouse and learn more about the life of their community’s inhabitants, known as the “Brothers.”
