Dippy the Dinosaur returns for a visit at The Natural History Museum
In 1905, Dippy, a Diplodocus skeleton replica, arrived in London for the first time after King Edward VII stated how much he’d like to obtain the specimen while visiting the home of the millionaire industrialist Andrew Carnegie.
From 1979 until 2017, this cherished dinosaur served as an awe-inspiring welcome image for visitors to the Museum.
Dippy took a well-deserved break from the Museum in 2017 and embarked on a cross-country tour of eight sites. In this time he’s made new friends in Dorchester, Birmingham, Belfast, Glasgow, Newcastle upon Tyne, Cardiff, Rochdale, and Norwich, among other places in the UK.
Over two million people have visited Dippy and other NHM friends on their journeys, smashing all previous records for yearly visitor figures at each location. Many others were meeting Dippy for the first time. Although the tour ended in October of last year, Dippy’s finally coming back home from May 27th to December.
